ABS Subsea Mining:
As the world continues its transition to a low carbon economy, demand is increasing for metals required for new forms of transportation and electrical storage. Metals such as copper, cobalt, nickel and manganese exist on land, but are increasingly difficult to extract sustainably. Subsea mining, a method of retrieving minerals from the seafloor, can be an alternative to the land-based mining given the abundant resour-ces on the seafloor. Guide for Subsea Mining, providing class requirements for the design, construction, in-stallation and survey of mobile offshore mining units intended for sub-sea mining. The Guide covers ship-type and column-stabilized units, focusing on three major elements: the hull structure; the anchoring and equipment; and onboard machinery, equipment and systems. The Guide also provides class requirements for subsea mining equipment and systems placed onboard mobile offshore mining units and submer-ged in water.
ABS Subsea Technology:
Investments in subsea technology over the past decade have paved the way for increased subsea development. At ABS, we recognize the im-portance of funding subsea research, from subsea manifolds and tem-plates, to communications technology and processing equipment. Our goal is to work with the offshore industry to verify the components that will allow safe and reliable subsea development. Subsea technology, electrification and communication research initiatives are underway in our technology headquarters in Houston and our global technology cen-ters around the world. And we are partnering with industry and univer-sities to develop technical guidance for the design, maintenance and life extension of subsea assets. Our Subsea, Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines (SURF) team is collaborating with industry groups such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and Institute of Electri-cal and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to research subsea power solu-tions that will enable new development.
